In brief: Garland, Ash intersection closed

The Spokesman-Review

The intersection of Garland Avenue and Ash Street on the North Side has been closed through mid-August to allow for installation of a concrete intersection as part of a larger project to rebuild Ash and Maple streets from Wellesley Avenue to Northwest Boulevard.

As part of the work, crews also will put in new water mains and fiber optic communications.

The $4 million reconstruction is part of a larger $117 million voter-approved street improvement bond issue. Earlier this summer, crews completed reconstruction of Maple from Northwest Boulevard to Wellesley. That section of street is now open to traffic.

Swimsuits needed for children

The Spokane Parks Foundation is seeking new swimsuits in a drive to make suits available to children using Spokane’s swimming pools. Three of Spokane’s community centers have been repeatedly stocked with free swimsuits since the swimming season began, but this season’s hot weather has increased demand, a foundation spokeswoman said.

The city’s public pools require proper swimwear. So far this summer, children have been able to obtain suits from the East Central, Northeast and West Central community centers or at the foundation office, 315 W. Mission Ave.

Donations of new suits, including adult sizes, are being accepted at those four locations. Also, donations are being accepted by the foundation at P.O. Box 2021, Spokane, WA 99210.
