NFL NOTEBOOK: No. 1 pick Russell misses training camp
The Oakland Raiders signed second-round pick Zach Miller, leaving No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell as the only player missing from training camp.
Coach Lane Kiffin said the Raiders are continuing negotiations with Russell. Last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick, Mario Williams of the Houston Texans, signed a six-year, $54 million deal that included a $26.5 million signing bonus, and Russell is reportedly seeking a deal near $60 million.
While Russell remains at his mother’s house in Mobile, Ala., Josh McCown and Andrew Walter are splitting reps running Oakland’s first-team offense.
“He’s still not here,” Kiffin said. “(We’re) still making movement on his contract but obviously not there yet.”
McNabb makes first practice
Donovan McNabb says he doesn’t need to be completely healthy to be a force in the NFL.
McNabb took part in the first practice of Philadelphia Eagles training camp, more than eight months after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
“I’d say it’s still about 75 percent,” McNabb said of his knee. “I haven’t tested it yet, but I can do everything I need to do in order to be successful. At 75 percent, I personally feel I can be one of the best quarterbacks in the league.”
Owens garners attention
A look at Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens’ day in training camp:
“The first lob pass thrown to Owens during the morning workout drew about as many camera flashes as a Barry Bonds at-bat. For the record, Tony Romo did hit Owens in stride.
“Seventh-round picks Alan Ball and Courtney Brown had tight coverage on Owens, but he managed to tip a pass to himself for the catch drawing a chorus of “T-O! T-O!” from the crowd during the morning practice.
“Owens was spotted riding a bicycle during some down time Friday. Asked if that was typical, he said, “I was just goofing off. Usually, I just try to get off my feet and rest a little bit.”
