Paul Applebee scattered six hits over eight innings, striking out four batters and walking three, as the Bellingham Bells (15-21) topped the Spokane RiverHawks 5-1 Monday in West Coast Collegiate League action at Gonzaga’s Patterson Complex.

Spokane’s Tyson VanWinkle and Phil Boscarino were both 2 for 4 to lead the RiverHawks (9-28) at the plate.

Volleyball

The University of Idaho was picked in the preseason coaches’ poll to finish tied for third in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Vandals, who finished third in the WAC with a 10-6 conference record last season, picked up 44 points in the poll to tie with San Jose State.

Hawaii and New Mexico State were picked to finish first and second, respectively.

Basketball

Tom Webb was named associate head coach with the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball team, head coach Wendy Schuller announced.

Webb came to EWU during the 2004-05 season, after a four-year stint as head coach at Northwest College (Powell, Wyo.). The Trappers were 94-32 under Webb.
