Area roundup: Bulldogs earn berth in title race

Gonzaga University’s varsity 4+ crew qualified for today’s Grand Final of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships by finishing second during its Friday semifinal.

The Bulldogs finished the 2,000-meter course at Cooper River in Camden, N.J., in 6 minutes, 22.905 seconds and were behind Temple (6:19.463) in the semifinal.

UCLA, Hobart, California and Brown also made the championship final.

The Bulldogs also competed in last year’s championship. GU has qualified three times in 10 years.

GU’s varsity 4- crew qualified for today’s Petite Final by finishing the repechage race in third place in 6:34.911.

The University of Washington’s four boats qualified for today’s grand finals. UW’s varsity 8 won its semifinal in 5:37.00.

Soccer

The Tacoma Tide defeated the visiting Spokane Spiders 4-1 in Premier Development League play.

Dan Scott scored at 38 minutes for Spokane, 2-3 in the Northwest Division. Tacoma improved to 3-1-1.

Softball

Danielle Lawrie (31-11) followed up Thursday’s no-hitter with a one-hitter as Washington (42-17) defeated No. 2 seed Northwestern 9-0 in five innings at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

The Wildcats (51-12) suffered their most lopsided loss since 2004 but are still alive in the double-elimination tournament. No. 6 seed Washington will play again Sunday.
