Martinez takes to the mound
Pedro Martinez threw off a mound Tuesday in Lucie, Fla., for the first time since rotator cuff surgery last fall, one of the major steps toward his goal of rejoining the New York Mets’ starting rotation by August.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw 31 pitches after warming up with seven throws. Before that, he threw on flat ground from 120 feet at the Mets’ spring training complex.
“I was very pleased with the way that it went,” Martinez said.
Clemens works out
Roger Clemens resumed his workouts at the New York Yankees’ minor league complex in Tampa, Fla., still aiming to make his 2007 debut Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The seven-time Cy Young Award winner threw in the outfield and briefly off a bullpen mound, one day after an MRI exam showed a scar-tissue injury in his right groin.
Jones not so chipper
It’s going to be a while before Chipper Jones returns to the Atlanta Braves lineup.
While the injured third baseman is eligible to come off the disabled list Friday, he will likely need several more weeks to recover from two injured wrists.
Jones had two cortisone shots in his left hand and one in his right hand in hopes of lessening the pain. He also is wearing a brace on each wrist.
Bonds sits out
Barry Bonds was held out of the San Francisco Giants’ starting lineup for the series opener against Arizona because of shin splints and aching knees that have been bothering the slugger.
