Kara Lawson scored 16 points, Yolanda Griffith added 14 and the Sacramento Monarchs won their third straight, beating the Seattle Storm 81-72 on Thursday night in Sacramento.

Chelsea Newton also scored 14 points, while Rebekkah Brunson and Nicole Powell had 13 points and 10 rebounds apiece in the Monarchs’ 12th consecutive home victory, a regular-season franchise record.

Sacramento had a comfortable lead until Seattle scored 11 consecutive points in the final minutes, trimming it to 71-69 on Sue Bird’s fifth 3-pointer with 2:02 to play.

But Lawson made two free throws and Powell hit a tough jumper with 1:06 left to seal it for the Monarchs.

Bird had 21 points. Iziane Castro Marques scored 12 for the Storm, who haven’t won in Sacramento since the 2004 season.

Mercury 80, Sky 66: At Phoenix, Penny Taylor scored 19 of her 21 points in the first half to help the Mercury snap a three-game losing streak with the win over Chicago.

Diana Taurasi added 22 points and Cappie Pondexter had 18 for Phoenix.
