Glacier road set for July opening

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

WEST GLACIER, Mont. – Officials say they hope to open Going-to-the-Sun Road, washed out in heavy rains last fall, by early July.

Engineers are making repairs where the road was washed out in three places by flooding in November. The repairs, costing about $6 million, include bridging a 108-foot gap in the two-lane alpine highway about half a mile east of the East Side Tunnel.

Construction includes gouging a temporary road into the side of a hill and building a retaining wall on a different section where the road was washed down to bedrock.
