Relive region’s fur trade history
Just because school is nearly out doesn’t mean kids should stop learning. A good way to sneak in a little history lesson is the annual Living History Fur Trade Encampment at the Spokane House. The encampment will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Spokane House Interpretive Center on Highway 291 half a mile north of Charles Road near Nine Mile Falls.
Kids can talk with traders and other historical figures and see period camps, tools, and clothing circa 1810-1825. There will be a canoe on display along with demonstrations of open-fire cooking and how to start a fire with flint and steel – skills that could come in handy on the next family camping trip. There will also be period music and games. Admission is free to the public. The event is sponsored by the Washington State Parks Department and the Friends of Spokane House. Call (509) 466-5064 for more information.
Child Safety Day
The Verizon Wireless location at Francis and Division will host child safety activities on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Come meet McGruff the Crime Dog and get photos and fingerprints of your kids with Operation Family ID. There will be treats and balloons for the kids and parents can check out demonstrations of the company’s Chaperone service, which allows parents to monitor where their child is via their cell phone. The store is located at 6227 N. Division St.
Mobius Kids
Budding scientists and kids who just like to figure out how things work can check out two upcoming events at Mobius Kids. A “Science Explorers: Microscopes” session will be held for ages 4 to 7 on June 21 from 2 to 3 p.m. The cost is $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers.
A week of hands-on activities in the “Things That Fly” camp will let kids make gliders, kites and rockets and learn what makes them fly. The camp is from June 25 to 28 with classes meeting daily from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The camp is for ages 7 to 10. The cost is $120 for members and $140 for nonmembers.
Call (509) 624-5437 to register. The museum is at 808 W. Main Ave. in the lower level of River Park Square.
