Medina earns unanimous decision over Wilson

Steve Christilaw Correspondent

W0RLEY, Idaho – Favio Medina got tagged repeatedly Thursday night at the Coeur d’Alene Casino.

The Sandpoint welterweight, fighting in the co-feature event with Atlanta’s Troy Wilson, was tagged with a series of jabs that kept blood flowing from his nose for all 10 rounds. In fact, the only thing Wilson wasn’t able to tag Medina with was the loss.

Medina spent the first four rounds of the fight moving backward against a relentless Wilson. Then, midway through the fifth round, Medina was able to land a solid right cross underneath Wilson’s jab, buckling the challenger’s knees.

From that point on, Medina turned more offensive, remaining on the lookout for an opening in Wilson’s defense.

In the end, Medina, now 14-1-2, came away with a unanimous decision.

Judge Mike Crawford scored the bout a one-point victory for Medina, making the knockdown round decisive. The two other ringside judges gave Medina a 97-92 edge.

In the main event, Jesse Brinkley, star of the first season of NBC-TV’s The Contender, scored a sixth-round knockout of Pasco’s Luis Lopez to stop a two-match losing streak. Including the final two bouts on the television series, Brinkley had lost four of his past five bouts going into Thursday’s match.

Brinkley scored early in the first two rounds, but began to give ground, despite continuing to punish Lopez with solid jabs.

The sixth round proved decisive. Brinkley scored a solid right hand that dropped Lopez. After getting up, Lopez was unable to land a punch and was dropped by a second right hand that ended the bout at the 1:27 mark.

In a preliminary bout, Newman Lake heavyweight Skyler Anderson, 6-1-1, bounced back from a controversial draw in his last bout to earn a unanimous decision against Billings’ Shawn Kocab.

“That last fight made me mad, quite frankly,” Anderson said. “I tried to put it out of my mind because you can’t be thinking about anything else but what you’re doing in the ring. But I wasn’t about to let this one end in a draw.”

Anderson used a substantial height and reach advantage to score consistently to the body throughout the six-round bout.

Steven Rodriguez, from Oxnard, Calif., earned a unanimous four-round decision over Spokane’s Ty Hume, now 0-2 as a professional.

Reno’s Jackson Brussel, making his professional debut, scored a first-round knockout on Matt Blake.

In a women’s bout, Boise’s Angie Dauenhaur and Portland’s Janna Simms fought to a majority draw, with two of the three judges scoring the fight even.
