Global warming

The Spokesman-Review

As a society, we are ruining the ozone layer and causing global warming. There is little doubt about this. Over the last century the temperature has climbed about 1 degree Fahrenheit. This is from the pollution of automobiles, deforestation, and nitrous oxide. Many kids here at school will drive.

My question I have for these students is: “Why are you driving, when you can help global warming and take the bus for free?!”

Another problem here is wasting. Every day I see someone throw stacks of paper into the garbage. At lunch, I see tons of garbage cans filled with recyclable bottles and paper trays. We do not understand what we are doing to the environment and need to be more aware. Without it, we can not survive.

“Mark Twain might as well have been talking about global warming when he famously remarked, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it.”

For many years we have heard so much about the causes of climate change, that we’ve missed the fact that there are simple solutions that can slow this growing problem. Technologies exist today that can cut emissions of heat-trapping gases and make a real difference in the health of our planet.

Hopefully, almost everyone is aware that global temperatures are on the rise. We are all attentive to some of the calamitous consequences that we face. Sure we’ve had some improvements in what goes into our chemicals, but what I’d like to know is what are we doing now? I don’t know about you but I don’t want to realize too late there were solutions that could have been done but weren’t.

It isn’t that hard to use energy more efficiently is it? Instead of buying incandescent lights take a few more steps down the aisle and look for fluorescent light bulbs. How hard could it be right? We have the technology and ingenuity to reduce the threat of global warming today. Why aren’t we using it?
