CenterStage doing ‘Laundry’
The Wishy Washy Washateria is the kind of place where you can do some sock-cleaning while also doing some boot-scootin’.
This mythical laundromat is the setting for the new dinner theater offering from CenterStage, “Honky Tonk Laundry,” by Roger Bean.
It’s a country jukebox musical, with 24 songs by Dolly Parton, the Dixie Chicks, Loretta Lynn, Martina McBride, Tammy Wynette, Reba McEntire and Patsy Cline, just to name a few.
The show takes place in Lana Mae’s laundromat, where she and new employee Katie commiserate about man troubles and unrealized dreams.
“Lana Mae has always wanted to sing, and Katie pushes her to follow her dreams,” said Janean Jorgensen, who plays Lana Mae. “They convert the laundromat to a concert hall, so the second half of the show turns into a concert.”
The songs include such classics as “Stand By Your Man” and “I Fall to Pieces” as well as newer songs such as the Dixie Chicks’ “Long Time Gone” and “Goodbye Earl.”
“It’s definitely a belting show,” said Jorgensen.
Beth Black plays the role of Katie. Olivia Brownlee has learned the parts of both Lana Mae and Katie and will fill in during various weeks for each of the other actresses.
Reed McColm directs the show, and the musical direction is by Leslie Ann Grove.
The dinner fare will have a suitably country theme as well, with choices including catfish with pecan butter sauce, pork, collard greens and cornbread. Vegetarian options also are available.
