EWU needs to save integrity
The recent firing of (Eastern Washington University men’s basketball) coach Mike Burns has the smell of Limburger cheese.
First, what violation occurred that merits ruining a man’s reputation and taking a family man’s livelihood away? (A reprimand would have been more fitting in light of the facts.)
Ninety days of severance pay is ridiculous. The president of Eastern needs to step in and rescue Eastern’s integrity by honoring Mike Burns’ (three-year) contract.
Other suggestions:
“Fire the interim athletic director and give him a 30-day notice.
“All scholarship athletes (should) attempt to transfer in protest.
“Void the offer to the new coach as it is obvious this was an inside job from the beginning. He comes from a losing program.
“Washington State University should hire Mike, as he is an excellent coach.

M’s consistently inconsistent
Ho hum, it looks like we are headed for another Mariners season like the last one, and the one before that, etc.
We just cannot put lineups out on the field with any steady performances as a whole team. There are a lot of individual performances, but we don’t get those with any men on base and the results seem to be mostly negative.
One big gripe is the placement of the “clean-up” hitter in the fourth slot. I have always thought a power hitter with an average of somewhere around the .300 mark is a necessary asset. It must put pressure on other hitters when they are trying to keep picking up an anchor batting .176. Why can’t we have someone in that slot with at least the power potential?
I do hope someone can see that eight guys trying to carry a lone ranger does not carry too many signs of success.
