THE SLICE

The Spokesman-Review

I was going to propose that today be declared Family Day.

Then I discovered that there already is such a thing — it’s the fourth Monday in September. It has an official proclamation, no doubt written by some low-level White House staffer before a machine affixed the president’s signature.

Maybe it’s well-intended and maybe it is just more empty rhetoric. But if Family Day were celebrated today it would at least be linked to a moment in our history when some fed-up people did, in fact, stand up for their families. Today is the anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

We all know how that bloody story would play out in the years that followed.

But on that one day, the home team won.
