Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire does not expect reigning A.L. MVP Justin Morneau’s bruised lung to require a stint on the disabled list.

“That’s never been talked about,” Gardenhire said Monday before the Twins played the Toronto Blue Jays. “I’ve been told a couple days here.”

Morneau was released from a Miami-area hospital Monday and headed home. Gardenhire wasn’t sure whether Morneau planned on coming to the ballpark.

Morneau bruised his right lung Friday in a collision with Florida Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo. He spent two days in the hospital.

Garciaparra to move

Nomar Garciaparra is moving across the diamond.

After spending the past season and a half as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ first baseman, Garciaparra will move to third base, perhaps as early as Friday.

Interleague a hit

Interleague games averaged a 34,905 attendance this season, a 15 percent increase from games between teams in the same league.

A record 8.8 million fans attended the 252 dates of interleague play, 200,000 more than last year, the commissioner’s office said.

One week after being diagnosed with a herniated disk, Randy Johnson looked sharp in a simulated game in Phoenix and could be close to returning to Arizona’s starting rotation. … Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca was suspended for two games and fined $2,000 following a weekend tantrum aimed at umpire Marvin Hudson. … Washington Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman will miss the rest of the season following surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. … Oakland right-hander Kiko Calero was placed on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed shoulder. … The Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a contract with Matt LaPorta, the seventh selection in this year’s amateur draft. … The Texas Rangers put right-hander Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list with a right triceps injury. … The St. Louis Cardinals added lefty Mike Maroth to their roster and placed reliever Tyler Johnson on the 15-day disabled list. … Pirates right-hander John Wasdin came off the disabled list after recovering from a sprained thumb.
