Volcanoes top Indians

The Spokesman-Review

KEIZER, Ore. – The Spokane Indians matched the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes hit for hit, played better defense and were given a gift of two runs on a hit batter and bases-loaded walk.

But all that didn’t add up to a win as they fell 5-3 in a Northwest League baseball game Wednesday night. The five-game series is tied 2-2.

The Volcanoes (7-2) went up 4-3 in the bottom of the third when Bruce Edwards tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Shane Jordan’s groundout. They added their final run in the sixth on Jackson Williams’ sacrifice fly.

The Indians (4-5) had tied the game at 3 thanks to an erratic third inning from Volcanoes starting pitcher Thomas Brewer. Brewer hit two batters, one of which forced in a run, and walked in another run. Renny Osuna’s double drove in Davis Stoneburner, who had led off with a single, with the other score.

Salem-Keizer scored first in the game with three runs in the second inning when Indians starter Jose Jaimes (0-1) gave up a double and three singles. Both teams had eight hits. The Volcanoes had three errors to the Indians’ one.

The Volcanoes’ second pitcher, Daryl Maday (2-0), got the victory with three innings of scoreless relief. Daniel Otero picked up his third save in the young season.

Jonathan Greene, batting cleanup, and Stoneburner led the Indians with two hits apiece.
