Indians lose game, series

The Spokesman-Review

KEIZER, Ore. – Having waited nearly 90 minutes to dodge the weather and play baseball, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes wasted little more time Thursday.

Michael Ambort’s RBI double highlighted a two-run first inning as the Volcanoes (8-2) defeated the Spokane Indians 6-1 on a rainy night at Volcanoes Stadium, capturing the Northwest League series 3-2.

Matthew Downs, in the seventh, and Jackson Williams, in the eighth, had solo homers for the Volcanoes.

Four S-K pitchers limited the Indians to five hits, with third pitcher Jason Neitz (1-0) picking up the win after 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Spokane trailed 2-1 after Ian Gac opened the fourth with a double to right and scored following two groundouts.

Spokane starter Derek Holland (0-1) was tagged with the loss, but both runs against him were unearned. Errors by Indians second baseman Renny Osuna and shortstop Davis Stoneburner opened the way to S-K’s two-run first.

Spokane (4-6) begins a three-game series tonight at the Tri-City Dust Devils. The Indians return home Monday for a five-game set with the Vancouver Canadians.
