Thursday’s A.L. results
Tigers 5, Rangers 2: At Detroit, Kenny Rogers allowed one run over six innings in his first home start since shoulder surgery, leading the Tigers over Texas. Rogers allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one as Detroit stopped a two-game losing streak and remained a half-game ahead of Cleveland in the A.L. Central.
Indians 4, Athletics 3: At Cleveland, Jason Michaels hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning and the Indians held off Oakland. An ill-advised throw by Michaels from left field let the A’s put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth against closer Joe Borowski. But Shannon Stewart popped out and Mark Kotsay flied out, giving Borowski his 22nd save in 24 chances.
White Sox 5, Devil Rays 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Javier Vazquez allowed one run in seven innings, Paul Konerko hit two solo homers and Chicago completed a four-game sweep of Tampa Bay. Vazquez gave up seven hits, three walks and had 10 strikeouts – his 30th career game with 10 or more.
Twins 8, Blue Jays 5: At Minneapolis, Frank Thomas hit a three-run shot in the first inning of Toronto’s loss to Minnesota, then was ejected in the ninth inning by plate umpire Mark Wegner after being called out on strikes for the second time in the game. The Twins’ Torii Hunter homered twice.
Yankees vs. Orioles, susp.: At Baltimore, the game between New York and the Orioles was stopped after a delay of 1 hour, 25 minutes. The Yankees were leading 8-6 in the top of the eighth when play was halted for the second time. The game will be resumed on July 27, at the point it was stopped, when the Yankees return to Camden Yards.
