Summer Carillon Series

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will host a series of concerts this month on the cathedral’s bell system.

The hour-long concerts will begin at 7 p.m. each Thursday and will be followed by tours of the cathedral and an opportunity to meet the performers.

All the concerts are free, and those attending are invited to bring chairs or a blanket along with a picnic dinner to enjoy on the lawn. Performances will take place rain or shine.

The first Thursday guest performer next week is Toru Takao of Himeji, Japan. He is studying for a Master of Music at the Dutch Carillon School and last year took second place at the International Carillon Competition in Holland.

In addition, the cathedral will host a special concert on Wednesday to celebrate the Fourth of July. The concert will be performed by cathedral carillonneur Andrea McCrady, with a duet with Takao.

Music begins at 9 p.m. Concertgoers may arrive early with a picnic dinner and stay afterward to view the fireworks over downtown Spokane. The event is free.

The cathedral is at 127 E. 12th Ave. For more information, call (509) 838-4277.
