Cougarland art happening

A time-limited, site-specific “art happening” takes place at the Cougarland Motel in Pullman on Friday.

“In(n) and Out of Nowhere” features 11 regional artists who will “transform and re-contextualize” a motel room, “constructing an installation that explores themes of travel, transience, isolation, desire and the boundary between public and private space,” says curator Samantha DiRosa in a news release.

Artists will use a variety of media, including sculpture, sound art, video and performance.

DiRosa, an assistant professor of Digital Media at Washington State University, says the objective of the event is “to take art out of the traditional venue of the gallery and museum, and present an art audience with new ways to consider commonplace objects, materials and spaces.”

Artists include DiRosa, Gabriel Brown, David Drake, Doug Gast, Jolie B. Kaytes, Perri Lynch, Nik Meisel, Mary Rothlisberger, Joseph Stengel, Randall Teal and Kristin Tollefson.

Artists will install their work between check-in time and 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The rooms will be open to the public from 7 to 10 p.m. at Cougarland Motel, 120 W. Main St.

Beginning Saturday, the Bank Left Gallery in Palouse, Wash., is showing oil paintings by Washington State University faculty member Tamara Helm, and organic glass sculptures by Mike O’Connor of Pullman.
