North Idaho on short end of blowout at Salt Lake

Gary Wilkinson scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Salt Lake routed North Idaho 86-38 Friday in Scenic West Conference play at Salt Lake City.

Nick Livi scored 10 points, but the Cardinals (23-9, 13-6) managed just 26 percent shooting from the field. The Bruins outrebounded NIC 51-20, including a 12-1 advantage on the offensive glass.

Brian Green added 12 points while Danny Vassey and Andy Palmer each chipped in 10 for Salt Lake (23-8, 12-7).

College baseball

Matt Way pitched six shutout innings as Washington State defeated Southern Utah 13-0 in the early game, and freshman Connor Lambert tossed a shutout through eight innings in a 3-0 WSU win over Air Force in the late game at the Banana Belt Tournament in Pullman.

Way struck out six while improving his record to 1-1, and Michael Ratigan allowed one hit in three innings of relief to earn the save for the Cougars (6-3).

Lambert allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out 10 to earn his first career win. Ross Humes struck out the side in the ninth to get the save.

Simi Reynolds, Jeff Miller and Josh Ashenbrenner all collected three hits on the day for WSU.

The Cougars conclude play at the tournament with a matchup against Lewis-Clark State at 1 p.m. today in Lewiston.

“Gonzaga scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal a 6-5 win over Utah Valley State at the Banana Belt Tournament in Lewiston.

Darin Holcomb’s single scored Evan Wells for the tying run, and Ryan Wiegand reached on a fielder’s choice to score Aaron McGuinness for the game winner for the Bulldogs (7-8). Shawn Wayt shutout the Wolverines (2-8) in the final two innings to earn the win.

Gonzaga will face Southern Utah today at 4 p.m. in Lewiston.

College football

Former Eastern Washington quarterback and assistant coach Jim McElwain was hired as an assistant football coach at Fresno State.

McElwain, who was quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2006, served as assistant head coach at Michigan State from 2003-2005. He will coach the quarterbacks and serve as the offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs.
