The Spokesman-Review

Mark Castellitto and Michael Rhodes drove in two runs apiece to lead Gonzaga (10-8) to its seventh straight baseball win, 11-5 in a non-conference matchup Thursday with Brigham Young (8-6) at Provo, Utah.

Gonzaga starter Josh Monroe (2-0) settled down to retire 17 of the final 19 batters he faced after giving up four runs during the first two innings.

Dustin Colclough was 4 for 5 and scored two runs for Gonzaga. Castellitto and Rhodes also scored two runs apiece.

Meanwhile, because of a delay in the installation of lights at Gonzaga’s new Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field, the time for six games has been changed from 6:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The affected dates are: March 20, March 21, March 23, March 27, March 30 and April 17.

“Sonny Garza’s RBI single capped a three-run eighth and gave San Jose State (11-5) a 6-3 non-conference victory over Washington State (6-5) at San Jose, Calif.

Jared Prince had two hits and two RBIs for WSU. Starting pitcher Wayne Daman Jr. didn’t allow a hit through three innings before giving up solo homers to Donato Giovanatto and Marcus McKimmy in the fourth.

Whitworth freshman Natalie Turner broke a 15-year-old Northwest Conference record when she finished second in the consolation finals in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4 minutes, 59.66 seconds at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Houston.

Turner’s effort bested the conference record of 5:01.01, set in 1992, and the school record of 5:01.17, set last season by Samatha Kephart.

Kephart, a junior, finished 14th in the 50 freestyle in 24.30, the fastest time in the conference this season.
