Area Roundup: Wauters earns honor

Idaho sophomore Matt Wauters earned All-America honors Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship at Fayetteville, Ark., with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw, setting a Vandals record in the process.

Wauters hit a personal-best throw of 69 feet, 9 ½ inches on his third toss of the day in the men’s weight throw, beating his school record of 69-9.

Washington State’s Tyson Byers (University High) finished third in the men’s pole vault, clearing a personal-best height of 18-½ to earn All-America honors.

Oregon’s Rebekah Noble (Rogers) advanced to today’s eight-person final after placing second in her women’s 800-meter heat and sixth-best overall with a time of 2:07.22.

“Whitworth’s Brandon Howell finished last in his 800 preliminary heat with a time of 1:57.02, and won’t advance to today’s final at the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Terre Haute, Ind.

Baseball

Mike Gilbert went 4 for 4 and knocked in three runs as Washington State routed San Jose State (11-6) 10-3 in non-conference play at San Jose, Calif.

Matt Way picked up the win for the Cougars (7-5).

“Jonathan Cluff had two RBIs to lead BYU (9-6) past Gonzaga 10-3 in non-conference play at Provo, Utah.

Brian Winston went 4 for 5 and had two RBIs for GU (10-9).

Swimming

Washington State’s Erin McCleave placed 14th in the women’s 200-yard freestyle event, earning All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis.

Prep basketball

Calvin Peterson scored 19 points and was named the game’s MVP, leading the West past the East 108-66 in the boys Idaho District I All-Star game at Mullan.

Coeur d’Alene’s Leon Duplessis added a game-high 20 points for the West, which led 75-45 after three quarters.

Bonners Ferry’s Kaitie Poston led the West girls past the East 56-45, and earned MVP honors after scoring a game-high 19 points.
