In brief: New York doctor pleads guilty in steroid case
A New York City doctor pleaded guilty Friday in Providence, R.I., to illegally writing prescriptions for human growth hormone and anabolic steroids on behalf of patients he never met.
Victor Mariani, part of a nationwide investigation into the illegal sale of steroids, said little during a brief hearing in U.S. District Court, except to acknowledge his guilt. He’s convicted of 26 counts accusing him of aiding and abetting the distribution of human growth hormone and anabolic steroids and other related charges.

LSU reviews contract
Two days after Pokey Chatman resigned as LSU’s women’s basketball coach, the university’s board of supervisors deferred action on a new $425,000-per-year contract for athletic director Skip Bertman.
Spokesman Charles Zewe insisted the board’s unanimous decision had nothing to do with the circumstances surrounding Chatman’s resignation or how that was handled by the athletic department.

Five-time Olympic medalist Apolo Anton Ohno returned to international competition after a nearly yearlong break and won the 1,500 meters at the World Short Track Speedskating Championships in Milan, Italy.
