Mancuso slips to third in standings
Julia Mancuso is ready to make some noise, ready to go after the overall World Cup title.
She was hardly deterred by her 24th-place finish at Zwiesel, Germany on Sunday in a slalom won easily by Marlies Schild, now the skier on top in the chase for the crown.
Mancuso is trying to become the first American woman to win the overall since Tamara McKinney in 1983. After Sunday’s race, in her weakest event, Mancuso dropped from second to third in the overall standings. She lost no points, however, for her outlook.
Schild, who already has won the slalom season title, had the best time in both runs and finished in 1 minute, 36.67. Anna Ottosson of Sweden and Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic shared second, 2.23 seconds behind.
Schild earned 100 points with the win, moving from third to first overall with 1,302 points.
After a poor first run, Nicole Hosp of Austria finished 11th to drop to second in the standings with 1,287 points. Mancuso is third with 1,251.
•Hans Grugger led a 1-2 Austrian finish in a World Cup super-G race at Kvitfjell, Norway, and Bode Miller finished seventh but increased his lead in the discipline standings.
Miller, who has won two of the four super-G races this season, increased his discipline lead from 56 to 76 points. He holds a 254-178 lead in points over Canada’s John Kucera, who finished 15th.
