Huskies take down Cougars
Bradley Boyer hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning, giving Washington a 5-3 win over Washington State Friday in both teams’ Pac-10 baseball opener at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Cougars catcher Greg Lagreid gave WSU (13-8, 0-1) an early lead when he hit a solo home run to center in the second.
Nick Hagadone (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Huskies (12-9, 1-0), while Cougars closer Ross Humes (1-1) took the loss.
“Utah Valley State scored five runs in the third and hung on to beat Gonzaga 5-3 in a non-conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane.
Dan Bulow hit a three-run home run for the Wolverines in the third. He finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
Josh Monroe (3-1), who allowed all five UVSC runs, took the loss for the Bulldogs (15-12) while Jace Brinkerhoff (2-4) earned the win for Utah Valley State (6-14).
“Community Colleges of Spokane scored four runs in the top of the ninth to break a 3-all tie and top Edmonds 7-3 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader in Lynnwood, Wash.
Cole Janini hit a two-run home run in the ninth and Cody Brubaker went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for CCS.
In the second game, Edmonds scored eight runs in the second and cruised to an 8-4 victory. Oliver Webster picked up the win for the Tritons while Mark Serino (3-1) took the loss for the Sasquatch (10-7).
Softball
Amber Keeler allowed no runs on six hits while striking out 11 in a complete game as CC Spokane topped visiting Yakima 1-0 in NWAACC play. The Sasquatch scored their run on an RBI single by Keeler in the first.
In the second game, CCS scored eight runs in the first two innings and coasted to an easy 9-2 win.
Jackie Purser hit two home runs for the Sasquatch (6-6, 2-0).
Women’s basketball
Washington State junior Dani Montgomery has chosen to forgo her final season and concentrate on her academic work needed to graduate next year, coach Sherri Murrell said.
Montgomery has played for the Cougars the last three years.
Track and field
Whitworth competed at the University of Puget Sound Open and the Willamette Charles Bowles Spring Classic, both in Tacoma.
In UPS Open results, Whitworth’s Ben Spaun won the men’s 110-meter high hurdles in 15.68 seconds. He was also part of the winning 4x400 relay (3:27.11). Cody Stelzer won the high jump (6 feet, 4 3/4 inches) and Joey Van Hoomissen the discus (124-6).
Suzy Viducich won the women’s high jump (5 feet, 1 inch) and finished second in the long jump (15-6 3/4). Kristen Dormaier won the triple jump (33-11 ½) and Kelly Bradley the discus (110-0). Joe E Mayer won the 3,000 (10:39.65).
