Kids providing muscle for spring cleaning

Correspondent The Spokesman-Review

It’s time for spring cleaning, and some kids in Rathdrum want to help you.

The DC Kids, 30 Lakeland Junior High School students, will spend their spring break (Saturday through April 7) doing yard work, moving stuff and doing other spring cleaning to earn money for a trip in June to Washington, D.C., and New York City.

These hard-working kids have raised $20,000 in a yearlong fundraising effort but still have a ways to go.

The kids are assigned in pairs, and the cost is $10 per hour. Think of all those leaves you didn’t rake before the first snow last year and call Diane at 773-3998. Take the chance to do your spring cleaning and help these kids reach their goal.

Hauser Lake 10K Fun Run

Grab your tennis shoes and put an end to the winter blues by heading out to Hauser Lake on Sunday for the Hauser Lake Fun Run, sponsored by Dashco in Rathdrum.

A Kids Run, free to all kids under age 12, will take place prior to the 10K run, which is open to people 13 and older. The event also includes a wheelchair class.

The race will start at 10 a.m. at the south end boat launch behind the fire station.

And if you have any energy left after the race, those guys from Parks and Recreation want you to bring your bikes and join them in a bicycle ride.

Registration is due Friday and costs $12 with a shirt or $5 without. If you have questions, call Rathdrum Parks and Recreation at 687-2399.

Lions selling street signs

If you’ve always wanted to see your name on a street sign, now is your chance.

Rathdrum Lions Club is selling street signs to help pay for a new pavilion at City Park. The 6-by-36-inch signs will be printed with the name of the donor and hung permanently in the rafters of the building.

The structure, a joint venture with the city, will enclose a kitchen area and a restroom.

The signs, available to both individuals and businesses, sell for $400. For more information, contact Larry Quimby at 687-3858.

Interested in traffic safety?

Rathdrum Mayor Brian Steele is looking for “two or three” people to fill vacancies on the Traffic Safety Committee.

The committee meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall on the first Thursday of each month. Members include Shanda Johnson, chairwoman; Darryl Rickard, Lakeland School District; Alex Carrington, Rathdrum Police Department; and Chris Riffe, city of Rathdrum.

The committee plays an important part in researching traffic, school and pedestrian safety issues. Way-finding signage soon to be installed around town is the result of a three-year project of this committee, and it soon will begin looking at enhancements for the state Highway 53 side of the pedestrian tunnel and pedestrian pathways along Stevens Street.

If you are interested in serving on the committee, call City Hall at 687-2700.

Selkirks topic of public meeting

The Kootenai County Planning Commission will discuss the Selkirk region in the commons area of Lakeland High School at 7 p.m. tonight.

The public meeting is the last being held to help commissioners create growth plans for eight regions they have outlined as part of their update of the county’s comprehensive plan. The Selkirk area encompasses all Kootenai County property north of Rathdrum and east of Ramsey Road.

Commissioners are hoping to confirm boundaries and determine characteristics of the area.
