NBA : Nowitzki injured in Mavericks’ victory

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

After their first 6-0 road trip, the Dallas Mavericks got home to set another franchise record – even without Dirk Nowitzki.

With their star out after hurting his left ankle in the first half, Jason Terry had 27 points with a couple of key late baskets and the go-ahead free throw in the Mavericks’ 105-103 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night for their 60th victory.

It is the third time the Mavericks have won 60 games, all in the last five years.

The Western Conference’s top team has 11 games left in the regular season.

After Nowitzki got hurt with 3:42 left in the first half, the Bucks went on a 14-4 run to take a 62-54 halftime lead. He returned for only about a minute after halftime, then left for good. The extent of his injury wasn’t clear.

With the game tied at 103, Terry penetrated and was fouled with 29.8 seconds left. He made the second free throw.

Dallas got a break when Ersan Illyasova had his second turnover in the final minute, a bad pass that led to a foul against Jerry Stackhouse with 15.5 seconds left. Stackhouse made the first of his two free throws and it was 105-103.

Michael Redd penetrated and took a shot in the lane with 3.3 seconds left. His acrobatic attempt was rebounded by DeSagana Diop, who was fouled and missed both of his foul shots. Mo Williams had a desperate half-court short at the buzzer that missed.

Redd led the Bucks with 34 points.

Stackhouse had 21 points for Dallas, while Nowitzki and Josh Howard – who appeared to hurt his right ankle in the final minute – both had 17 points.

Off the court

Former NBA player Micheal Ray Richardson was suspended by the Continental Basketball Association for anti-Semitic comments the Albany (N.Y.) Patroons’ coach made in a newspaper interview. Richardson will miss the rest of the CBA’s best-of-5 championship series after he told The Albany Times Union that he had “big-time Jew lawyers” working for him. “They got a lot of power in this world, you know what I mean? Which I think is great.” … Atlanta leading scorer Joe Johnson might be done for the season because of a right calf strain. … Jermaine O’Neal missed Indiana’s game against New Jersey with left knee and ankle sprains. … Steve Francis left New York’s game against Cleveland in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle. … Caron Butler returned to Washington’s starting lineup after missing six games with a left knee contusion.
