Post Falls took a close Inland Empire League softball contest from visiting Lake City Monday afternoon, 5-4, for its 12th win of the season, placing itself firmly in the logjam in the IEL standings.

Lauran Nagrone blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth, Gisselle Kaufman doubled in Lisa Steinbach for Post Falls (12-10, 8-8) to take the lead. From there, Post Falls went on to hold Lake City (14-8, 9-7) scoreless in the final three innings. Blake Meredith struck out 10 on the mound for Post Falls for her sixth win of the season.

Baseball

In the IEL, Sandpoint clinched the No. 1 seed in the district after defeating Lakeland (5-17, 0-15) 7-3 in Rathdrum. Cory Hawkins had a two-run double in the fourth inning to spark a four-run rally. Sandpoint scored three unanswered runs to close out the game, including two runs in the seventh. Dustin Hawkins went the distance for Sandpoint (12-11, 9-7), scattering 10 hits with six strikeouts. … At Moscow, Lewiston took both halves of an IEL doubleheader. In game one, Tyler Knigge fanned nine through five innings and Beau Balmer went 3 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Lewiston’s 12-2win. Matt Martin added a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Lewiston. In game two, Lewiston scored six runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run Matt Martin double and Tom Kerr’s three-run homer, for a 19-7 win. Dan Flanagan went 1 for 2, 3 for 5 on the day for Moscow (7-13, 6-9). Lewiston (20-4, 16-3) claimed the No. 1 seed for the IEL.

•From the Panorama League, Derek Gianukakis struck out 11 and walked two in a seven-inning no-hitter over visiting Springdale. Republic won 8-0. Gianukakis had a double, triple and homer in game two in an 18-2 win.

Boys golf

In the IML, Dustin Jerome topped the leaderboard with a 4-over 37 for Kellogg in a dual meet Monday against Priest River. Kellogg shot a 156, Priest River shot a 183. Teammates Sam Redmond and Kyle Finlay shot 38 and 40 respectively for Kellogg.

Tyler McDougall and Nick Ellis of Eastmont finished atop the leaderboard with matching 1-under-par 71s in the Inland Empire tournament at Deer Park Golf Club. Connor Moran from Lewis and Clark shot a 2-over 73 for a fourth-place finish and Hank Frame of University tied for fifth with a 74. Eastmont finished with a 297, followed by U-Hi (316), Ferris (318) and Mead (321).

Girls golf

From the IML, Taryn Cochrane shot a 4-over 37 to lead Kellogg in a dual meet against Priest River. Shelby Hatfield finished second for Priest River with a 42 and Alyssa Jarvey shot a 48 for Kellogg. Priest River had an incomplete team.
