Area Roundup: NIC softball advances
The fourth-seeded North Idaho softball team beat fifth-seeded Snow 12-5 and then ran over Scenic West Athletic Conference champion and tournament host Salt Lake 9-2 Thursday at the Region 18 tournament in Salt Lake City.
Heather Gemmell hit a three-run homer in the Cardinals’ five-run third-inning as NIC beat Snow (23-31) to advance to the second round.
Kelcey Cavan allowed one earned run on four hits in the complete game as NIC topped Salt Lake (35-17).
Kristen Burtch went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to lead the Cardinals (39-24), who will play again today for a chance to play in the title game on Saturday.
Football
The Spokane Shock added defensive lineman Micah Littlejohn to their roster.
Littlejohn, a 6-foot-3, 255-pounder, comes to the Shock after finishing his career at Hampton University where he compiled 125 tackles and 17 sacks in 34 career games.
After finishing his career at Hampton, Littlejohn joined the Tennessee Titans but did not make the 2006 roster.
Defensive lineman A.J. Orlebar suffered a knee injury in last week’s game against Stockton and has been placed on the injured reserve list.
Tennis
Gonzaga’s Marco Antonio Pineda has been named an All-West Coast Conference honorable mention. Joining Pineda in earning conference honors is the Bulldogs doubles team of Bryce Cooper and Roman Dojack, who were also named honorable mention.
Basketball
North Idaho College point guard Nick Livi will sign a letter of intent to play for Southern Utah University, NIC men’s coach Jared Phay said.
Livi averaged 16.5 points and 3.2 assists last season. He made 37.8 percent from the floor and 33.8 percent on 3-pointers. Livi played at Eastern Washington University as a freshman before leaving the program during the season.
