Zags too much for Lions

Clayton Mortensen allowed two runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings as Gonzaga beat Loyola Marymount 9-2 in a West Coast Conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field in Spokane.

Aaron McGuinness and Ryan Wiegand each had three hits to lead the Bulldogs (29-21, 12-5), who beat the Lions (20-29-1, 7-10) for the second time in as many days.

“Sean Ratliff hit two home runs, leading Stanford (19-24, 4-12) to a 6-4 win over Washington State (21-21, 4-12) in a Pac-10 game at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Travis Coulter had two hits to lead the Cougars.

“Jon Whiteside’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth drove in Kyle Richardson and gave Whitworth (14-25) an 8-7 win over visiting Central Washington in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader at Merkel Field in Spokane.

The Pirates’ Joel Tampien tied the game at 7 with a two-run homer in the eighth.

In the second game, Central Washington’s Kevin Walkenhauer hit a two-run homer in the second, leading the Wildcats to a 5-4 win.

Tyler Levin (10-2) earned the win for Central Washington (26-18) after scattering seven hits and striking out six in the complete game.

“CC Spokane swept visiting Blue Mountain (9-34, 3-21) in a NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College. Brian Yardley and Braden Friesz had four hits and two RBIs as the Sasquatch won the opener 11-1.

In the second game, Stephan Malkuch allowed two hits and struck out 12 in eight innings as CCS won 8-1.

Yardley hit his first home run of the season for the Sasquatch (25-17, 15-9).

Softball

CC Spokane swept Walla Walla (34-16, 17-9) in a NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.

Amber Keeler hit a two-run homer in the fourth as the Sasquatch won the opener 9-4.

In the second game, CCS built a 9-3 lead and held on to win 9-8. Kristie Newell hit a two-run homer in the third and finished with three RBIs to lead the Sasquatch (20-19, 14-11).

Track and field

Washington State’s Diana Pickler is in first place in the heptathlon while Rickey Moody is fourth in the decathlon after the first day of the Pac-10 Combined Events at Cobb Track and Angell Field in Stanford, Calif.

After the first four events in the heptathlon, Pickler has 3,586 points and leads Arizona State’s Jackie Johnson by 63 points.

In the decathlon, Moody has 3,829 points and trails the leader, Arizona’s Jake Arnold, by more than 1,000 points.

“Idaho’s Russ Winger, competing unattached because he is redshirting the outdoor season, won the men’s shot put with a personal-best throw of 67 feet, 2 1/4 inches at the Vandal Jamboree in Moscow, Idaho. The effort was the fifth-best toss in the United States this year.

Eastern Washington’s Chad Chambers won the men’s high jump with a personal-best leap of 6-10 3/4. His jump ranks him seventh in school history.

On the women’s side, EWU’s Carolee Gutierrez set a school record in the discus with a throw of 160-9.

Washington State’s La Shawnda Porter-Red won the women’s 100- (11.95 seconds) and 200-meter (23.92) dashes.

“Former University High School and University of Washington track star Brad Walker took second place in the men’s pole vault with a leap of 18-1/2 at the IAAF-Osaka Grand Prix at Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan.
