Hints from Heloise

The Spokesman-Review

Dear Heloise: I had your recipe for prewash spray and loved it, but I don’t have it anymore. Could you please repeat it for me? – Marian, via e-mail

Marian, this is an old hint from 30-plus years ago that is still good today! It’s easy and cheap to make, and it’ll save you lots of money!

You will need to combine equal amounts of: nonsudsy household ammonia, dishwashing liquid (not dishwasher detergent, liquid or gel) and water.

Put these into a clean spray bottle and shake to mix. Be sure to clearly label the bottle with its contents and put in large letters “Do not use with household bleach” or any other product containing bleach. Caution: Remember, ammonia and chlorine bleach should never be combined; they will cause a toxic and harmful gas if they are.

To use this prewash, just spray on the stained area of clothing and wash immediately – do not let set for more than five minutes. – Heloise
