The Spokesman-Review

Molly Burt led a 3-4-5 Idaho finish in the heptathlon and the Vandals women took the early lead in the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships Thursday in Fresno, Calif.

Burt’s 4,834-point total led freshmen teammates Darcy Collins (4,740) and Lindsay Goodman (4,593) as the Vandals notched 15 team points, three ahead of Hawaii which had the individual champion in Annette Wichmann (5,557). In the men’s decathlon, Utah State’s John Strang was the winner with 6,770 points, while UI’s Ian Snook was third (6,149).

Women’s golf

Idaho is tied for 11th after the first day of the NCAA West Regional at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah.

The Vandals were led by juniors Renee Skidmore and Kelly Nakashima, who both shot a 3-over-par 74s and are tied for 32nd.

Washington State is tied for eighth at 17-over 301. Sophomore Jessica Black is tied for ninth after shooting a 72 to lead the Cougars.

Stanford leads the tournament at 3-over 287.

Boxing

Spokane favorite Chauncy Welliver is scheduled for a featured bout in the May 30 professional card at Northern Quest Casino.

Welliver, 31-3-4 with 11 knockouts, faces Denver’s Corey Williams (6-6-2) in an eight-round feature bout for the Washington State heavyweight title.

Welliver earned a split decision victory over Chad Van Sickle in March.

In the main event, Alonzo “Big Zo” Butler, 38-1-0 with 32 KOs, returns to Airway Heights for a 10-round bout with Ralph West, 17-11-1 with 14 KOs.

Butler, coming off a unanimous, 10-round decision over James Walton in February at the Wynn Resort on Las Vegas, will make his third appearance at Northern Quest. Butler came away with a no decision in the Jan. 15 main event when Troy Beets declined to continue after a second-round foul, and scored a second-round TKO over Travis Fulton last May 31.
