Eastern garners guards
Eastern Washington University is adding four guards to its men’s basketball team.
Head coach Mike Burns made the announcement Tuesday that junior college guards Adris DeLeon (College of Southern Idaho) and James Doran (Sierra College, California), and brothers Drew and Jamie Eisinger (Jackson High, Mill Creek, Wash.,) would join the Eagles next season.
They join three signees from November to replenish a roster that lost four seniors (Paul Butorac, Rhett Humphrey, Derek Risper and Neal Zumwalt) and two transfers (Omar Krayem and Michael Taylor).
Also, the status of star Rodney Stuckey is up in the air. He applied for the NBA draft but did not hire an agent, so he can withdraw his name and return to school if he chooses. The draft is June 28. The deadline to withdraw is June 18.
DeLeon is a 6-foot guard who was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in the Bronx. He averaged 8.4 points, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals for CSI, which finished 30-7 in reaching the semifinals of the national JC tourney. Prior to attending CSI, DeLeon went to College of the Siskiyous in California.
Doran is a 6-3 guard who averaged 20 points a game as a freshman and 15 as a sophomore, both years earning first-team all-conference honors.
“We are extremely excited to have two players of the caliber of Adris and James join our basketball family,” Burns said. “Both come from outstanding junior college programs and will make an immediate and significant impact in our program. Both young men not only possess great basketball ability, but they also possess great character.”
Drew Eisinger, a 6-4 guard, graduated from Jackson last year and attended prep school in Ohio for a year. Jamie, a 5-11 guard, graduates this spring. Both earned all-state honors as seniors.
In their last season together, Jackson finished fifth at state and both were all-league. Drew averaged 19.7 points in the regular season and 24.5 at state to earn all-tournament recognition.
Drew went on to average 21.5 points, 5.6 assists and 2.9 steals at Western Reserve Academy, shooting 56 percent from the field, including 52 percent from the 3-point line.
Jamie averaged 21.1 points a game as a senior.
The Eisingers are the first Jackson players to receive a scholarship from a Division I school. Because Drew attended a prep school, he still has four years of eligibility.
Signing with Eastern in November were 6-10 Nathan Lozeau from Marysville-Pilchuck; 6-3 guard Trey Gross from Edison High in Stockton, Calif.; and 6-9 wing Kaylone Riley from Phoenix Junior College.
