In brief: Southeast work to start May 29

Reconstruction of Southeast Boulevard and Sherman Street from Third Avenue to Perry Street gets under way on May 29, according to Spokane public works officials.

The 1.4-mile project is part of a $117 million street improvement bond issue approved by voters in 2004. The $2 million job on Southeast and Sherman involves excavation of the old road bed and a full reconstruction of the street, including a new base of gravel.

Plans call for maintaining local access for residents and businesses along the route. Workers may need to close three or four individual blocks during working hours as the project moves along, but residents and businesses will be notified in advance, said Ann Deasy-Nolan, information coordinator for street bond projects.

Detour routes are Third and Fifth avenues as well as on Arthur and Perry streets.

Parking will be eliminated along Southeast Boulevard during the construction period of three months or longer.

Lilac festival parade Saturday

The 69th Annual Spokane Lilac Festival Armed Forces Torchlight Parade will be Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Here’s to the Heroes,” and more than 200 units have registered.

East Valley High School’s marching band will open the parade.

The streets will be closed along the parade route starting at 4 p.m. The parade route is Washington Street to Second Avenue, Second to Lincoln Street, Lincoln to Spokane Falls Boulevard, and Spokane Falls to Washington, and includes the area within those streets.

Lions Club elects officers

The Spokane Central Lions Club has elected its officers for the 2007-08 year.

They are: Howard Bergdoll, president; William Bunch Jr., first vice president; Laura Wintersteen-Arleth, second vice president; Carole Lionburger, secretary; Cliff Miller, treasurer; Donald Peters, tail twister; Roger Arleth, lion tamer; and trustees, Leander Teichmer, Scott Opperud.

The immediate past president is Sanford Gerberns.

Calling all volunteers

Community Frameworks is in need of volunteers May 29 through June 9 to move usable nursing home equipment from 424 W. Seventh Ave., which will be redeveloped for affordable housing.

The equipment will be donated to several nonprofit organizations.

The group also is looking for volunteers to clean up graffiti and the grounds.
