CCS baseball splits at Avista
Addison Proszek struck out 13 in a complete-game two-hitter as CC Spokane topped Wenatchee Valley 2-1 in their NWAACC East Region baseball playoff opener Friday at Avista Stadium.
The Sasquatch lost to Walla Walla 5-4 in 11 innings later in the day. CCS stranded a runner on second in the bottom of the 11th.
CCS (28-20) faces Wenatchee Valley again today at 11 a.m. in a loser-out game.
Walla Walla beat Columbia Basin 6-1 and Wenatchee Valley topped Columbia Basin 6-3 in the other two games at Avista.
“Wayne Daman Jr. pitched the first complete game of his career, leading Washington State to a 5-1 win over UCLA (28-23, 12-7) in a Pac-10 game at Bailey-Brayton field in Pullman.
Daman allowed one run on five hits and improved his record to 5-4.
The complete game marked the first by a Cougar since March 28 when Jayson Miller went the distance in a 2-1 win over BYU.
Paul Gran went 2 for 4 and scored twice to lead the WSU (26-23, 9-13) offense.

T.J. Steele hit a three-run triple in Arizona’s (37-13, 12-7) four-run first-inning.
Jason Erickson suffered the loss for the Huskies (27-24, 9-10) after allowing five earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
Softball
CC Spokane kept its tournament hopes alive after routing Pierce 13-0 in five innings at the NWAACC championships in Portland.
The Sasquatch erupted for seven runs in the first and led 11-0 after three innings. Whitney Dilworth scored three times and Mellissa Piephoff drove in two runs to lead CCS.
Chantel Booker earned the win for the Sasquatch after striking out seven in a complete-game three-hitter.
CCS fell 5-3 to Bellevue earlier in the day. Ashley Addison hit a two-run homer in Bellevue’s three-run third. The Sasquatch stranded five runners in scoring position.
CCS (23-21) plays Everett, which lost 11-5 to Lower Columbia, this morning at 9 a.m.

NIC beat Texarkana 5-1 in their first game. Kelcey Cavan earned the win after allowing four hits in the complete game.
The Cardinals advanced to play Georgia Perimeter and won 4-3. Keely Torgison’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth scored Justine Williams and won it for the Cardinals.
North Idaho (45-26) meets Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (54-6) today in a loser-out game.

Men’s golf
Whitworth posted a team score of 327 and finished in 23rd place at the NCAA Division III tournament at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Ind.
Pirates senior Andrew Parrott shot an 8-over-par 80 on the final day and finished in a tie for 19th. Whitworth’s Steven Johnson finished the tournament tied for 52nd with a total of 315.
Clinton Dammann of St. John’s (Minn.) won the tournament with a four-round total of 287. St. John’s won the team title with a total of 1,204 strokes.
“Washington shot a 17-under 271 in the second round of the NCAA West Regional at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., and climbed into a tie for fifth place.
Senior Alex Prugh (Ferris) shot a 6-under 66 and is tied for 23rd at 6-under 138.
Five other Huskies shot rounds under par. Chris Killmer shot a 5-under 67 and Joel Dahmen (Clarkston) shot a 4-under 68, while Zach Bixler and Erik Olson each carded round of 2-under 70.
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes today.
The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA championships May 30-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va.
