Area’s athletes wrap up their seasons
Athletes from the South Side have scattered to the four winds to complete their high school seasons.
Golfers completed their state tournaments Wednesday in Bellevue. Tennis players will be in Vancouver and Yakima and track athletes in three different locales for this week’s 2006-07 season-ending contests.
Lewis and Clark’s boys turned on the speed and finished second in last week’s 4A regional meet.
Zach Robinson won the 100 meters and the 400 relay, which included Robinson and shot put champion Alex Shaw, was victorious.
Ferris distance star David Hickerson turned in an impressive double, winning the 800 in 1:54.2, fifth best in state and second among all 4A runners. He also clocked 4:14.35 for 1,600 meters, fourth-best in his class.
Saxon Kelly McNamee high-jumped 5-foot-8, just off her state lead and was second in the 100 hurdles. LC’s Eleanor Siler, a cross country distance runner, qualified for state in both the 200 and 400 sprints, the latter with the fourth-best time in state, 56.79.
Cheney’s boys and girls advanced a number of athletes to 2A state in Tacoma, including Jesus Fregoso‘s swift 10.6 in the 100, a double win in the shot put and discus by Griffon Jones, Shelby Maurer‘s 11.9 in the 100 and Crystal Simmons‘ 58.9 in the 400.
Medical Lake 400 runners Daryl Stolworthy and Tyler Souders clocked 50.0 and 50.3 and Aly Ganyo ran 2:22.3 for 800 meters in the girls meet.
Liberty girls won the 2B district meet. The Lancers this weekend compete at Eastern Washington University.
Near tennis sweep
Greater Spokane League tennis players captured most of the state berths in regional last weekend to this week’s tournament in Vancouver.
Ferris’ Whitman Hough won boys singles with Mead’s Ethan Vaughn finishing third over Lewis and Clark’s Miguel Candido. Tigers Chris Martin and Nick Johnson beat Saxons John Cadagan and Kevin Satre in doubles.
LC’s Elise Otto was the girls champion over Gonzaga’s Anna Lambert and Katie Griffith of Ferris took third.
LC seasonal players, Erica Ehlo and Lyndi Seidensticker, noted for volleyball and basketball respectively, finished second to Katrina Schwab and Britta Stime from Mead. Saxons Christina Berg and Kelsey McLauchlin took third.
