Chewelah girls win title; NWC boys third
On the strength of two finishers in the top five, the Chewelah High girls captured the State 1A golf title Wednesday at the North Bellingham Golf Course.
Chewelah scored 43 points to outdistance Seattle Christian (30), led by Gracie Shory (88-85–173) in second place and Kelsey Harting (90-86–176) in fourth. Darby Moberg of Freeman was sixth (95-95–190).
Kelli Bowers of Chelan (81-77–158) was medalist.
Meanwhile, the Colfax boys (57 points) finished seventh at the same course, on the strength of a tie for third place by Kyle McPherson (72-79–151). Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) was 10th and Freeman tied for 12th.
Dane deQuilettes of Chelan (72-79–151) was the top individual. Charles Wright Academy (82.5) took team honors.
2B/1B
The Northwest Christian boys (89 points) placed third in the team race at Lake Padden Golf Course in Bellingham, with two top-five finishes.
Jared Descoteaux (77-81–158) and John Graham (75-84–159) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, behind medalist Andrew Putnam of Life Christian Academy (70-70–140).
NWC was well behind winner Life Christian Academy (146) and just behind Asotin (90.5). Wilbur-Creston (24) finished eighth and Lind-Ritzville (11.5) was 10th.
In the girls, Tekoa-Oakesdale (15 points) finished fourth behind winner Lopez Island (43) at Lake Padden.
KyLee Schmunk of Lind-Ritzville (100-98–198) was the highest area finisher in fourth. Sydney Conway of Bear Creek School (93-88–181) was medalist.
2A
The Clarkston girls (54 points) finished fifth in the team race at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club in Bellingham.
The Bantams’ Kaylin Carlson (89-82–171) was the highest area individual finisher in sixth place. Deer Park finished eighth in the team race.
Katie Sharpe of Bellingham (73-75–148) won going away, as did her team (156.5).
In the boys, Casey Cox of Colville (13th place, 71-79–150) was the highest area finisher at Bellingham Golf & Country Club.
Gaston De La Torre of Hockinson High (70-71–141) was medalist as his team captured the title (149.5).
3A
The East Valley girls (24.5 points) finished in ninth place at Sudden Valley Golf & Country Club in Bellingham, led by Ashley Saffle (16th place, 86-83–149).
Brittany Tallman of Issaquah was medalist (72-70–142). Interlake was team champ (81.5).
In the boys, Alex Moore of Hanford High (75-67–142) won a three-way playoff on the second hole to win at Homestead Farms Golf Resort and lead his team to the title (83.5).
There were no area finishers in the boys’ top individual or team placings.
