It's no coincidence that on the same weekend that a big pirate movie is arriving in theaters, the Valley Hastings is planning a big pirate bash. Children under 12 are encouraged to attend the party, set for 3 p.m. today, in costume. There will be maps leading to treasures, photo opportunities and (temporary) tattoos. So grab your eye patch and head down to 15312 E. Sprague Ave. Maybe you can talk Mom or Dad into taking you to the movie afterward.

Last chance

Today is the last day of the Gardeners of Spokane spring plant sale at the Hutton Settlement. Now is the time to be planting annuals, perennials and vegetables (though it may be a bit early yet for tomato plants). All these will be available at the sale, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at 10255 E. Upriver Drive. So pack your green thumb and check out all the young plants available.

Arf, arf!

There are plenty of dog lovers around, and there's a fair chance there will be a lot of them at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center this weekend for the AKC All Breed Dog Show. The show, hosted by the Spokane Kennel Club, will include obedience trials and rally trials. There's sure to be more dogs than you can shake a stick at.

Hours are from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Sunday. Admission is free, but there will be a fee for parking. The fairgrounds are at 404 N. Havana St.
