In brief: Rehearing sought on e-mail privacy ruling

The Spokesman-Review

Marina Kalani is asking the Idaho Supreme Court to reconsider its opinion that e-mails she exchanged with Kootenai County’s elected prosecutor are public records.

Kalani, the former coordinator of the county’s juvenile drug court, filed a petition Thursday asking the Idaho Supreme Court for a new hearing.

The petition was filed the day before the court’s decision was expected to become final.

The Spokesman-Review sued in 2005 for e-mails exchanged between Kalani and her supervisor, county Prosecutor Bill Douglas, after the juvenile court program dissolved amid financial questions.

Kootenai County’s insurer, the Idaho Counties Risk Management Program, paid Kalani $69,146 to settle a defamation claim shortly after she resigned from the county in March 2005.

Idaho’s appellate rules require Kalani to file a brief within two weeks to support her request for reconsideration.

Girl killed in wreck identified

A teenage girl killed in a Thursday night wreck in south Spokane County was identified Friday as 15-year-old Selenia Daniels.

Daniels was a freshman at Liberty High School and was on the junior varsity volleyball and softball teams, Liberty Superintendent Duane Reidenbach said in a written statement.

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies said the crash happened when a Chevy Corsica driven by an unlicensed teenage boy went out of control near the intersection of Calumet and Marsh roads, rolling 100 feet down an embankment.

Others were injured in the crash. A 14-year-old girl was admitted to a Spokane hospital and was in satisfactory condition Friday morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A 16-year-old male passenger was treated at a downtown hospital and released Thursday night.

The 16-year-old driver and a 17-year-old girl did not need medical treatment.

All five teens in the car were students at Liberty High School.

Two dogs running loose kill, injure goats

Six goats were killed and seven injured Friday morning by two dogs running at large in north Spokane County, animal control officials said.

Neither the dogs nor their owners have been identified, said Patricia Simonet of Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services. One dog was medium to large with medium-length white hair. The second was a medium to large black dog with white on its chest.

The dogs killed four baby goats and two adult goats in the attack near Oregon and Bruce roads, Simonet said. Five adults and two kids, were injured, some severely.

Two women witnessed the dogs attacking the livestock animals Friday morning and chased the dogs off, Simonet said. They reported “injured or dead goats everywhere.”

Anyone with information on the dogs is asked to contact SCRAPS at (509) 477-2532.

Toddler hurt in crash declared brain-dead

An 18-month-old girl critically injured in a Wednesday evening crash north of Spokane has been declared brain-dead but remains on life support, hospital officials said Friday.

The man who police say caused the crash, Michael Q. Beckley, will be charged with vehicular homicide, said Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Mark Baker.

Gabriella Autry was with her mother, Belinda Autry, stopped at a traffic light at Day Mt. Spokane Road and Highway 2 when their Subaru Legacy was hit from behind by a Chevy Blazer. The force of the impact pushed the Subaru into another vehicle.

Gabriella Autry was in a child safety seat.

According to the WSP, the driver of the Blazer, 34-year-old Beckley, was not paying attention and may have been fiddling with a cell phone.

Court records show that Beckley has been convicted of driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, illegal drug possession and theft.

The other drivers were treated and released from the hospital.

Officer hospitalized after cycle crash

A Spokane police sergeant has been hospitalized after a motorcycle crash.

Sgt. Eric Olsen was involved in the single-motorcycle crash on a return trip from training in the Tri-Cities, said Spokane police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer DeRuwe. He was driving a Spokane Police Department motorcycle.

Olsen was taken to Kennewick General Hospital where he was stabilized and transferred to Spokane’s Sacred Heart Medical Center, a Kennewick nursing supervisor said. Hospital officials in Spokane would not release Olsen’s condition.

His injuries are not life-threatening, DeRuwe said.

Olsen was on Highway 395 about 15 miles north of Pasco when the crash occurred, DeRuwe said. The Washington State Patrol is investigating.

Olsen has been with the department for 17 years, DeRuwe said. He is the supervisor of the swing shift traffic unit.
