Musson, Albrecht claim state titles in field events

TACOMA – David Musson of Colville and Anna Albrecht of Pullman used their arms to capture the lone state titles for Eastern Washington athletes Saturday afternoon as the State 2A track and field championships concluded at Mount Tahoma Stadium.

For Albrecht, she coupled a state title in the discus with the title she defended in the shot put Friday. The satisfying thing about the discus is it was unexpected.

Albrecht, a junior, threw the discus 145 feet, 6 inches – extending her personal best by 12 feet. Ashley Kenney of West Valley took second (138-0).

“I guess I started listening to my coaches for the first time,” Albrecht said. “I’ve got some bad habits that are hard to break. Not all the bad habits were gone, but I fixed some major things.”

The funny thing was, Albrecht’s first throw was about 4 feet shy of 100.

“I’ve been really throwing well in practice lately,” Albrecht said. “For me, a lot of it is not overthinking and just throwing. Winning the discus is a big surprise. It kind of knocked me off my feet.”

Musson, a junior, set a state-meet record in the javelin, throwing 211-10 to break the previous mark (199-3) set last year by Michael Davis of King’s. The record came on his second throw in prelims.

“I knew it was close (to the record). It felt good when I released it,” Musson said.

His state title has followed a steady progression. He was third as a freshman and second last year.

“It’s awesome to break the state record,” Musson said. “It’s a big deal to me”

Musson said he wants to throw in the 230-foot range next year.

Albrecht helped Pullman finish third (43) and earn a trophy. Sehome snapped the Greyhounds’ string of back-to-back titles with 54 points. Burlington-Edison was second with 47.

In the boys, Sehome made it a sweep (79), dethroning champ Pullman.

The Greyhounds finished 15th (17), the highest finish by an area team.

Lindsay Myron of Pullman, the defending champ in the 300 and 100 hurdles, was dethroned. Myron finished fourth in the 300 (47.37) and seventh in the 100 (16.31).

Other area athletes winning medals were: Bri Almy of West Valley took third in the 100 (12.84) and third in the 200 (26.45); the Pullman’s girls took third in the 1,600 relay (3:28.28); Crystal Simmons of Cheney took fifth in the 400 (1:00.05); the Cheney girls took sixth in the 400 relay (51.10); Nick Cassleman of Pullman took third in the 110 hurdles (15.48); MacKenzie Lauber of Cheney took fifth in the long jump (15-11); Chantel Duenich of Deer Park took sixth in the 1,600 (5:07.08); Zach Linsley of WV took seventh in the javelin (162-1); Ally Ganyo of Medical Lake took fifth in the 800 (2:21.53); Devin Almas of Colville took seventh in the triple jump (42-5 1/4); Mitch Chandler of Riverside took fifth in the 800 (1:58.86); Justin Rose of Colville took fifth in the 3,200 (9:46.08); and Tyler Souders and Daryl Stolworthy of Medical Lake finished seventh (51.16) and eighth (52.49), respectively, in the 400.
