Cougars drop season finale to UC Davis
Eddie Gamboa got out of a ninth-inning jam and pitched a complete game in his first start of the season to lead the UC Davis Aggies to a 4-2 season-ending, non-conference baseball victory over the Washington State Cougars Sunday afternoon at Davis, Calif.
Washington State entered the top of the ninth trailing 4-1 and got the tying runs on base before Gamboa struck out the final two hitters to end the threat.
UC Davis (24-32) scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two Washington State miscues.
Washington State (28-26) recorded back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1993-94.
•Matt Hague homered in the eighth inning to tie the score, capping a 4-for-5 day, and pinch-hitter Joey Lind’s single to left scored pinch-runner Matt Stevens with the winning run as the Washington Huskies closed out their regular season with a 5-4 win over the visiting California Bears.
California (29-26 overall, 12-12 Pac-10) and Washington (29-27, 11-13) are both hopeful of a berth in the NCAA regionals.
Softball
The University of Washington will open the College World Series on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Oklahoma City against DePaul.
The Huskies will be making their eighth appearance in the CWS and first since 2004.
Women’s rowing
At Oak Ridge, Tenn., Western Washington University captured the NCAA Division II championship for the third consecutive year, the first time a school has accomplished the feat since the NCAA began a rowing championship in 1997.
The Vikings’ varsity eight – including Lindsay Mann-King of Colville and Amelia Whitcomb of Ferris – won by nearly two boat lengths.
•The University of Washington concluded its season with a 10th-place finish in the Division I meet. Brown finished first overall. Yale, whose winning varsity eight boat included Jamie Redman (Lewis and Clark High), finished fourth in the team standings.
