Parental guidance

The Spokesman-Review

Excerpts from conversations on the Parents Council blog this week.

The new neighbor: “So a registered sex offender (child molester) moved into our neighborhood, about five doors down. We’re right near a park, there’s a day care within one block and my son’s elementary school within four blocks. This really makes me tense.

“I’m trying not to worry excessively but I am very angry. … I feel torn between letting my son have some expanding boundaries and posting this guy’s photo on our fridge, arming my kids with tasers and erecting a 5-foot brick wall around our yard.” – Posted by Debbie G.

“I’d definitely put the guy’s picture on my fridge.

“See what happens? We try to dialogue about how to let our kids explore and gain independence. We try to mother, not ‘smother,’ and a child molester moves in down the street.

“What’s a parent to do?

“Reading this makes me want to batten down the hatches. Tasers and the brick wall are sounding pretty good.

“And the irony of it all, is that studies show that most children who are molested or abused are assaulted by family members or people known to the family, not the stranger down the street.” – Posted by Cindy H.
