Prep Roundup: Clarkston ousts WV
Brian O’Kelley ran for 176 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns as Clarkston secured the No. 2 seed to the state tournament with a 41-7 rout of West Valley Thursday in Clarkston on the final day of the Great Northern League regular season.
Bantams’ quarterback Isaac Woodbury added 195 yards and two touchdowns on 14 of 21 passing.
Clarkston (9-1, 6-1) enters the 2A state tournament as the District 7 second seed and will play a first round game Nov. 9 or 10 at the Tacoma Dome.
The Eagles (5-5, 4-3) are finished for the season.
Elsewhere in the Great Northern League, Jared Byers caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score to lead Pullman to a 25-0 shutout of host Deer Park (3-7, 1-6). Trevor Peterson and Rachid Badini added rushing touchdowns for the Greyhounds (10-0, 7-0), who enter the first round of the state tournament as the top seed. … Colville earned the third and final seed to state with a 28-0 win over host Riverside (5-5, 2-5). Marc Smith threw two touchdown passes to lead the Indians (8-2, 5-2). … Jesus Fregoso ran for 122 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead Cheney to a 32-20 win over visiting Medical Lake (2-8, 0-7). Brandon Hardie added two passing touchdowns for the Blackhawks (5-5, 3-4), who outscored the Cardinals 22-0 in the first quarter.
“Brian Lee ran for two touchdowns, both in the first half, and Gonzaga Prep routed Pasco 42-14 in a non-league game at Gonzaga Prep. Bryan Karwacki led the Bullpups ground attack, finishing with a 151 yards on 14 carries. Gonzaga Prep ends its season with a 7-3 record.
Girls soccer
The Great Northern League top seeds West Valley and Cheney notched District 7 2A second-round wins to secure spots in the 2A state tournament. Laura Estey and Torrey Finn scored first-half goals to guide the Eagles to a 2-0 shutout of Pullman at West Valley. Karina Carpenter made nine saves for West Valley to preserve the shutout. … In Cheney, Chelsie Breen scored twice and Ceri Palk added a goal and two assists as Cheney topped Riverside 6-2. Kellie Zakrzewski and Jessica Ziemann each added a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks. Cheney (16-2) and West Valley (14-4) will play Saturday at 11 a.m. to decide the top two seeds to state. Riverside (9-8) and Pullman (16-3) will follow at 1 p.m. in a loser-out match to decide the third and final seed. Both matches are at Spokane Falls Community College.
Boys soccer
Taylor Baek’s goal off an assist from Sam Annan in the 35th minute was all St. George’s needed in a 1-0 shutout of Moses Lake in a regional 1A/B playoff match at Gonzaga Prep. The Dragons dominated, outshooting the Lions 13-4. … Also at Gonzaga Prep, Jared Friedly’s hat trick powered Northwest Christian past Riverside Christian 3-1. Derek Buttrick assisted on two of Friedly’s goals. NWC (9-5) and St. George’s (14-2) will play for the top two seeds to the state tournament today at 1 p.m. while Moses Lake Christian and Riverside Christian will play for the third seed in a loser-out match at 11 a.m. Both games are at Gonzaga Prep.
Volleyball
Tekoa-Oakesdale and Garfield-Palouse each went 2-0 at the District 9 1B tournament in Pomeroy and will play each other Saturday at 11 a.m. at Colfax to decide the top two seeds to the state tournament. The Nighthawks defeated Colton 25-17, 25-13, 25-12 and then beat Rosalia 25-20, 25-22, 25-21. The Vikings topped Tri-Cities Prep 25-9, 25-15 25-15 and Liberty Christian 25-20, 25-14, 25-13 to earn a spot in Saturday’s championship. Touchet, Rosalia, Liberty Christian and LaCrosse-Washtucna all went 1-1 and will play in loser-out games on Saturday.
