ALEX MACK, CAL CENTER

There isn’t a national line award for which this 6-foot-5, 300-pound junior isn’t in line, including the Lombardi, for which Mack is a semifinalist. Not only is Mack a road-grader of a blocker, he’s also quick enough to reach defenders on the second level.

KEVIN MCCALL, WSU RUNNING BACK

Into the breach created by Dwight Tardy’s injury enters this little-used senior from Carson, Calif. McCall has been mostly a special-teams performer. In his 51 career carries, he has one touchdown. That came in style, when he broke off a 53-yard run last season against Idaho.

SYD’QUAN THOMPSON, CAL CORNERBACK

The Cal defense has been on a downward slide, but Thompson just keeps getting better. The sophomore has broken up six passes, twice as many as any other Cal defender. The one prize missing for Thompson is an interception, not a surprise with most teams avoiding his side of the field. The other corner, Brandon Hampton, gets most of the work and he’s picked off two passes.
