OUTFIELD

Calif. bites bullet

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently signed two bills into law impacting shooters and hunters in California:

“Requiring microstamping for semiautomatic firearms sold in the state by 2010. (The yet-to-be-field-proven marking of shell casings could eventually help identify the weapon from which they are fired.).

“Banning lead from center-fire hunting ammunition used in certain hunting districts to prevent more lead-poisoning deaths in endangered California condor that feed on crippled game.

This isn’t the first time Schwarzenegger has flexed his muscle on shooters. In 2004, he approved the California ban on private citizens owning .50-caliber rifles.

OUTFISH

Snake sturgeon gain ground

One day in a hatchery truck has moved the white sturgeon past an obstacle that has been blocking its upstream ambitions in the Snake River for about 150 million years.

The Idaho Fish and Game Department moved 74 of the sturgeon above Shoshone Falls (near Twin Falls) and released them in the river near downtown Idaho Falls.

The fish ranged from 3 to 7 years old and were from 18 inches to 3 feet long. Some should be 5- to 6-feet long and bending angler’s rods within a few years.
