Hail Harrell

Texas Tech junior Graham Harrell eclipsed the 4,000-yard passing mark for the second season in a row during the win over Baylor.

Harrell become the fifth quarterback at the NCAA’s highest level, formerly referred to as Division I-A, to have multiple 4,000-yard seasons.

Ty Detmer of BYU and Timmy Chang of Hawaii each had three 4,000-yard seasons, and Byron Leftwich had two at Marshall. Hawaii senior Colt Brennan has already had two 4,000-yard seasons, plus has 2,820 yards through eight games this season for the 12th-ranked Warriors, who were off Saturday.

Harrell hit 4,000 yards on the nose when he completed his first pass for 21 yards.

Fifty is enough for Broyle

Arkansas named its home football field after outgoing athletic director and former football coach Frank Broyles at halftime of the game against South Carolina in Fayetteville, Ark.

Broyles is retiring at the end of the year, his 50th with the school. He was hired as the football coach in December of 1957 and remained at the helm through the 1976 season. He has remained athletic director ever since, but he announced in February he was stepping down.

After a brief video tribute, a curtain was pulled aside above the south end zone, revealing the words “FRANK BROYLES FIELD” – and Broyles then led the crowd in a “Pig Sooie” call.

The 82-year-old Broyles playfully high-stepped his way into the end zone as he left the field.

Scoring machine

Rice’s Chase Clement threw for six touchdowns and ran for two more in a 56-48 victory over Texas-El Paso. Clement, who set a Conference USA record by accounting for eight touchdowns, completed 32 of 58 passes for 395 yards and ran for 103 yards. The six passing touchdowns set a Rice record and tied the conference mark, and his 498 total yards were a school record.
