Tacoma eliminates CCS
Jessica Costello scored the first goal and assisted on the second Wednesday as host Tacoma Community College defeated Community Colleges of Spokane 3-1 to open the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges women’s soccer playoffs.
Chelsea Kelly and Valerie Hartle also scored for the Titans (9-9-1), who advance to play Shoreline (12-4-2) on Saturday. Kelly’s goal at 67 minutes gave Tacoma a 2-0 advantage.
Jennifer Lenz scored at 89 minutes for the Sasquatch, who finished the season 11-8-3.
•Whitworth’s Sean Bushey was named Northwest Conference coach of the year and four of his players were selected to the All-NWC first team.
Freshman defender Kaylyn Plumb (East Valley High), junior defender Kelly Baker, senior midfielder Jael Hagerott (Mead High) and senior forward Greta Thibodeau made the first team for the Pirates.
Women’s basketball
Nicole Scott scored 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 35 seconds left, and Eastern Washington defeated visiting Central Washington 61-56 in an exhibition game at Reese Court.
Volleyball
Molly Blankenship had 16 kills and hit .480 as CC Spokane (32-13, 11-3) clinched second place in the NWAACC East Region with a 3-2 win over Walla Walla (33-9, 10-4) at Spokane Falls CC.
Trailing 2-1, the Sasquatch won the fourth game 30-15 while hitting .438 and took the clincher 15-12. The win, CCS’ fifth straight, avenged a 3-2 loss to the Warriors on Oct. 3.
CCS will open the NWAACC championships Nov. 15 at Mt. Hood CC in Gresham, Ore., against West No. 3 Pierce.
Men’s golf
The University of Idaho wrapped up its fall season with an 18th-place finish at the Turtle Bay (Hawaii) Intercollegiate.
The Vandals’ Colter Kautzmann shot a closing-round, 2-under-par 70 and finished tied for 44th at 5-under 211.
Idaho finished at 863, 63 shots behind team champion Tennessee.
