Cougars lose opener

The Washington State women’s basketball team opened its season with a 70-40 non-conference loss to Portland at Friel Court Friday in Pullman.

Laiken Dollente and Rachel Warren had 11 points apiece to lead the Pilots, who were also playing their opener.

Katie Appleton had a game-high 12 points for the Cougars, but made just 2 of 13 shots.

Men’s soccer

Garrett Maloney’s goal in the 12th minute was all Loyola Marymount needed in a 1-0 win over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles.

The Bulldogs, who entered the match tied for second place in the WCC, fell to 9-4-4 and 4-2-2 in conference play while Loyola Marymount improved to 3-13-1, 1-8.

•Andrew Wiedeman’s goal in the 69th minute gave No. 19 California a 1-0 Pac-10 win over Washington in Seattle.

The Huskies dropped to 7-7-2 and 2-4-1 in conference play while the Golden Bears improved to 11-4-1, 6-2.

Women’s soccer

Top-ranked UCLA beat Washington State 2-0 in a Pac-10 Conference match at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman.

The Bruins improved to 15-1-2 and 8-0 in conference play while the Cougars fell to 10-5-3, 3-4-1.

•Ashli Sandoval scored a goal in the 86th minute to give eighth-ranked Southern California a 2-1 victory over Washington in a Pac-10 match at Husky Soccer Field in Seattle.

The Huskies dropped to 5-12-1 and 2-6-1 in conference play while the Trojans improved to 14-2-2, 7-1-1.

Volleyball

Alix Klineman had 10 kills and 10 digs to lead No. 5 Stanford to a 30-22, 30-21, 30-22 Pac-10 win over Washington State in Pullman.

WSU fell to 9-19 and 0-14 in conference play while the Cardinal improved to 24-2, 13-2.

•No. 4 Washington defeated California 16-30, 30-21, 30-26, 30-22 in a Pac-10 match in Seattle.

The Huskies improved to 23-2 and 12-2 in conference play while the Golden Bears fell to 20-6, 9-5.

Hockey

The Spokane Braves fell 3-1 to the Golden Rockets in a KIJHL game at Golden, British Columbia.
