CCS men, women roll

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch men and women were runaway winners at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges cross country championships on Saturday at Lewisville Park in Battle Ground, Wash.

The CCS men rolled to their seventh straight conference title, easily outdistancing runner-up Everett 19-73.

The CCS women made it back-to-back titles with a 27-73 win over second-place Everett.

The Sasquatch men had six runners finish in the top 10 – led by the 1-2 finish of Dak Riek, who ran the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 4 seconds, and Mark Moeller (25:10). Tyler Rapp (25:54) was fourth, followed by Charles Cummings (fifth, 26:20), Max Reeder (seventh, 26:27) and Walter Juarez (10th, 26:48).

The CCS women had four runners finish in the top six – led by winner Brittnee Sanchez in 19:09 over 5,000 meters. Karen Owens (19:38) was third, followed by Amy Durrance (fifth, 19:41) and Katie Owens (sixth, 19:44).

CCS coach Erik Anderson was named men’s coach of the year and co-coach of the year for the women.

•Whitworth freshman Nick Gallagher earned a berth in next week’s NCAA Division III cross country championships with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Regionals at McIvor Park in Estacada, Ore.

Gallagher ran the 8K course in 25:36.70. The Whitworth men placed sixth out of 13 teams with 136 points. Willamette won the team title with 50 points.

The Whitworth women finished eighth out of 16 teams, led by the 31st- and 33rd-place showing of Jenna Cunningham (23:24.7) and Gillian Goodrich (23:27.8). Willamette won the team title.

•Washington State University’s women finished sixth and the men were eighth at the NCAA Division I West Regional meet at Springfield Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

Junior Drew Polley topped the WSU men with a 25th-place finish in 30:49.1 over 10K, while Sara Trane (31st, 21:16.1, 6K) led the Cougars women.

Oregon’s men and Stanford’s women won team titles.

Also at the meet, Eastern Washington University’s men placed 14th and the women 18th. Paul Limpf finished 45th in 31:17.4 to lead the Eagles men, while Mattie Bridgmon was 20th in 21:01.35 to lead the women.

The Idaho men finished 18th and the women 19th.

Melissa McFaddan topped UI with a 54th-place finish in 21:40.2, while Kevin Friesen led the men, placing 74th in 32:03.25.

Volleyball

The Eastern Washington Eagles (14-13, 12-3) kept their Big Sky Conference title hopes alive with a 30-24, 30-25, 30-25 sweep over the visiting Portland State Vikings (20-6, 12-3) in Cheney. Hayley Hills had 16 kills and Alysha Cook added 15 kills to pace the Eagles. EWU is host to first-place Sacramento State Friday and a victory would clinch a share of the conference title.

•Elaina Renius tallied a match-high 16 kills and finished with a .517 hitting percentage to power the Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-11, 5-7) to a 30-27, 30-17, 33-31 sweep over Portland (7-19, 0-12) in West Coast Conference play in Portland.

•Sarah Loney had 26 kills and 26 digs and Haley Larsen added 20 kills and 26 digs to lead the Idaho Vandals (13-14, 9-7) to a 23-30, 30-23, 30-26, 30-26 win over Boise State (5-22, 2-16) in Western Athletic Conference play in Moscow, Idaho.

Men’s soccer

Travis Green had two goals and Jay Vela added a goal and two assists to spark the CC Spokane Sasquatch (17-4-2) to a 5-2 win over Pierce CC (8-5-6) in a quarterfinal match of the NWAACC tournament at Spokane Falls CC. CCS plays Peninsula CC in the semifinals on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.

Women’s soccer

Lori Conrad found the net in the final minute of the second overtime to propel the Gonzaga Bulldogs (12-7-1, 3-4) to a 1-0 season-ending victory over Pepperdine (5-8-6, 2-4-1) in WCC play at Martin Field.

Women’s basketball

Former Lewis and Clark High star Katelan Redmon scored 19 to for the Huskies, but Washington fell to Kansas State 88-61 in its opener at Manhattan, Kan.
