The Spokesman-Review

A couple of freshmen golfers from the Spokane area are the Community Colleges of Spokane scholar-athletes of the month for October.

Katie Sorenson from Central Valley, whose accomplishments included claiming medalist honors in the Treasure Valley Invitational and leading CCS to a couple of first-place team finishes, is the female selection.

Brian Copley from Shadle Park, named to the CCS district athletic committee, had three top-10 finishes and is the male choice.

College scene

Kevin Keefe, a 2004 graduate of Gonzaga Prep and senior at San Francisco, scored a unanimous decision at 150 pounds in a three-round bout during the inaugural International Boxing Invitational on the USF campus a week ago.

The 10-bout card, which attracted a crowd of 3,000, included members of the Philippines Olympic team. Keefe, in his first bout after taking a year off from boxing, defeated a fellow college student, Jener Ruiz.

Chad Langlais, who left Spokane at age 15 to further his hockey future, got his college career started in a big way, earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week honors.

Langlais, who played youth hockey locally while attending Adams Elementary and Chase Middle School before going to Michigan for high school, is a freshman defenseman at Michigan. He had four assists in two games to earn the honor.

Langlais, who played in Lincoln, Neb., in the United States Hockey League last season, has six assists in eight games, five in the last three.

Alaina Smith, a 2005 graduate of North Central whose participation in basketball, volleyball and track earned All-Greater Spokane League recognition in the latter two, has become a successful member of the Dartmouth College equestrian team.

In a five-show season this fall, the junior collected three blue ribbons for first-place finishes in the novice flat class and also earned ribbons for placing second, third and fourth in novice fences in her first season of jumping at the collegiate level.

Smith, who tried out for and made the equestrian team last year as a sophomore, started riding locally at Busy Bee Ranch.

Dustin Allbery, a Seattle University senior defender from North Central via Community Colleges of Spokane, is a first-team selection on the Daktronics All-Far West Region men’s soccer team.
